ADOPT A HYDRANT

During the winter months the Department of Public Works is busy plowing and treating the roads, and removing snow from the parking lots downtown as well as from the intersections so the cars have proper sight distance.  After all of these tasks are complete, we begin shoveling the fire hydrants in Town and we could use your help.  Please let us know if you would like to adopt a hydrant to shovel.

SPRING CLEANUP

The Department of Public Works will soon be conducting its Annual Spring Cleanup for residential properties.  The only items that will be picked up are bagged leaves, grass, weeds, sticks, small branches and other organic yard material in biodegradable paper yard waste bags. Brush must be no more than 4 feet in length with limbs no greater than 5 inches in diameter, and the weight of each bundle may not exceed 40 pounds. Please tie the bundles with string or light rope. Do not use wire, metal strapping or plastic rope.

A maximum of one truck load per household will be picked up. Please have your load ready at the beginning of your pickup week.  Your spring cleanup week is determined by the day your curbside rubbish pickup falls on.  Please note that your yard waste:

·        will not be picked up with the garbage truck

·        must be curbside by 7:00 am on Monday morning of your spring cleanup week.

·        must be in biodegradable paper yard waste bags, which can be purchased at grocery and home improvement stores.   (plastic bags will not be accepted for pickup)

If your regular rubbish pickup is on Monday or Wednesday, your Spring Cleanup week will be the week of April 21 through April 25, 2008.

If your regular rubbish pickup is on Thursday or Friday, your Spring Cleanup week will be the week of April 28 through May 2, 2008.

All yard waste will picked up curbside by a separate truck.

If you have in excess of one truckload of yard waste or you miss your collection week you may bring the remainder of your yard waste to the transfer station.  The Town will NOT pick up appliances, furniture, tires, etc.  These items may be brought to the Town’s Solid Waste Facility on Tuesday and Saturdays. There are fees for certain items. A residential Solid Waste Facility Permit is required.

ROAD WORK CREWS

Public Works road crews will soon be out cleaning drainage ditches, cutting grass and brush by the roadside, and performing other road maintenance tasks.  If you see those big orange warning signs, please be courteous, slow down and proceed with caution.  Roadside work is a dangerous job and by slowing down and using caution you lessen the danger to the road crew and yourself.

EXCAVATION PERMITS

If you need to excavate within the Town’s right of way you’ll need to obtain a Street Excavation Permit from the Department of Public Works.  Street Excavation Permits are $150.00 and you must have a Dig Safe Number and a current Certificate of Insurance naming the Town of Pembroke as Certificate Holder.

RECYCLING SAVES!

By recycling 1,680 lbs. of aluminum cans, we conserved enough energy to run a television for 170,957 hours! By recycling 48 tons of paper, we saved 822 trees!  By recycling 131 tons of scrap metal, we conserved 131,107 pounds of coal!

In 2007 a total of 4,905.87 tons of solid waste was generated from Pembroke residents and businesses, and disposed of at the incinerator in Penacook, NH.  With the addition in 2007 of the Town’s commingled recycling container at the Transfer Station, the total tonnage of solid waste taken to the incinerator in 2007 was 278.82 tons less than the total tonnage taken in 2006.

The Department of Public Works would like to thank those residents that actively participate in the Town’s recycling program and we would also like to remind those who don’t recycle that today is a great day to start!

At this time, the Town of Pembroke does not provide curbside recycling and all items must be brought to the Transfer Station.  Besides residential trash the Transfer Station accepts appliances, construction and demolition debris, tires and recyclables such as #1 PETE Plastic Bottles (i.e. soda bottles, no caps), #2 HDPE Plastic Bottles (i.e. milk jugs, laundry detergent bottles, no caps), Tin Cans (i.e. food/pet food cans), Glass (i.e. jars, bottles, of any color) Aluminum Cans, Mixed Paper (i.e. cardboard, egg cartons, junk mail, newspapers, magazines, etc.) Waste Oil, Antifreeze, Scrap Metal, Leaves, Brush, Auto Batteries, Cell Phones, PDA’s, Rechargeable Batteries, Ink Jet Cartridges, Textiles, and Propane Gas Cylinders.  Fees are charged for some items such as appliances, gas cylinders and tires.

Pembroke residents that have a facility permit may use the Transfer Station located at 8 Exchange Street (by Memorial Field) on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm.

Effective January 1, 2008 New Hampshire State Law HB 416 prohibits the disposal of mercury containing devices at landfills, transfer stations, and incinerators. This means these items may not be disposed of as a solid waste with the “normal” garbage.  The ban covers products including: Thermometers, Fluorescent lamps, Thermostats, Mercury button cell batteries, Switches and relays, etc. This applies to residents as well as businesses.

2008 FACILITY PERMITS

2008 Facility permits are being issued at the Department of Public Works.  Facility permits are free of charge and allow you to utilize the Transfer Station, White Sands Recreation Area, and also allow you to park in the municipal lots.  Facility Permits expire each year on December 31st and you need to obtain a new permit each year.  Please present a valid Department of Motor Vehicles Registration at the Public Works Department Office for the vehicle(s) you wish to permit.  Facility permits are issued strictly to residents in the Town of Pembroke and your registration must reflect that.  If your registration requires an address change you may do so free of charge at the Town Hall.  The office is open Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.  If you have any questions please call the Public Works Department at 485-4422.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE

A special collection event for household hazardous wastes is scheduled to take place in the Fall.  Watch for the date in the next newsletter.

CURBSIDE PICKUP

This is a reminder to all residents that curbside pickup should only be bagged household rubbish.  The containers can neither exceed 40 pounds in weight nor 35 gallons in volume and must be put out by 7:00 am.  The Pembroke Public Works Department will not pick up microwaves, television sets, miscellaneous appliances, tires, or demolition.  These items have to be brought to the Transfer Station located at 8 Exchange Street.  Feel free to call 485-4422 with questions.
