Complaints against Police Personnel

The image of the Department depends on personal integrity and discipline of all departmental employees.  To a large degree, the public image of this Department is determined by the professional response of the Department to allegations of misconduct against it or its employees.  The Department will competently and professionally investigate all allegations of misfeasance, malfeasance, and nonfeasance by employees and complaints bearing on the Department’s response to the community.

The Department encourages citizens to bring forward legitimate grievances regarding misconduct by employees.  All officers are obliged to explain to inquiring citizens the complaint procedure.

Complaints received from the public can fall into two categories; those that violate department rules and those that violate state or federal law. Department rule violations will be investigated internally by the Chief of Police. Violations of state or federal law will be investigated by an outside law enforcement agency.  The Chief will decide which avenue to pursue after receiving the complaint. In both incidents you will receive a letter from the Chief of Police acknowledging your complaint. The Chief will keep you posted of the process of the investigation and will inform you of its out come.

You may file a complaint in person, via phone, in writing, or by e-mail. Anonymous complaints will be investigated as completely as possible. Department members shall receive complaints courteously and shall handle them efficiently.  Complaints can be addressed to;
